Nelson Mandela 100th Birthday Card
To celebrate what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday on July 18th 2018, the artist Harold Riley has created a unique 16 page card.
Riley is the only artist that Mandela ever sat for and the result was a portrait which sold for over $1m in an auction at the Rockefeller Centre in New York. The money from the sale went to the Imibala charity in South Africa, and was used to build a school.
The special birthday card contains personal photographs from the portrait sittings, some of the preliminary drawings for the portrait and prose from Riley about portraiture.
It also recounts the story of a little girl meeting Mr Mandela. “He loved and cared for children above all else,” said Riley, “He once said to me that how we treat our children is always the greatest reflection of ourselves.”
The card is in a signed and numbered edition of only 250 cards and comes in the Riley signature presentation box.
This highly collectable item is the sixth in a series of cards that Riley has been working on. These unique cards are produced by the artist in his studio and will be very much sought after in the future.
All proceeds from the sale of these cards go to benefit the Riley Educational Foundation - a charitable trust established to preserve and maintain Harold Riley's life's work
